New collaboration between the two singers gets a video praised for its visual aesthetics and arrives on the eve of the Grand National tour
Kendrick Lamar and SZA released the long-awaited music video for “Luther” on Friday (11). The song, featured on Lamar’s album GNX, is an R&B and hip-hop ballad that samples “If This World Were Mine”, a hit by Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn. The music video is directed by Karena Evans, known for her visual work with artists such as Drake and Coldplay. In the material, she prints a cinematic aesthetic marked by symmetrical composition, soft lighting and transitions that accompany the emotional progression of the song.
In one of the most symbolic scenes, Kendrick and SZA appear sitting on opposite benches in a wide hallway, emphasizing the loneliness and connection between the two artists — the main theme of the song.
The collaboration between Lamar and SZA, who had previously worked together on All the Stars (2018), precedes the Grand National Tour, a joint tour that will begin in Minneapolis and will pass through several cities in North America and Europe.
